Fireworks are legal in Utah…and people are allowed to shoot them off three days before the holiday and three days afterwards…and if the Fourth of July isn’t enough, the locals have another state holiday called “Pioneer Day” that falls on July 24th…with more fireworks three days before and after…and it sounds like Beirut…or a deep-summer Friday night on the south side of Phoenix happening all over again in my backyard…..

  1. Great shot, Scott. Sissy has been hiding out under the bed or trying to climb up on my head.

    • Thank you, Gunta…and yes, we used to have a dog who would spring into our laps when the neighbors shot-off their fire-crackers…wonderful. I can imagine your pooch trying to climb onto your head. 😉

  4. Great explosive shot…..our day is 5 November when we burn Guy Fawkes…..the dog hates it.

    • I read about that Guy Fawkes…quite a story there…and I’m sure the dog does hate it. 😉

  5. Yes, they are legal in our country too, and I am able to enjoy them on certain occasions, such as independence day. But there are those who fire them on weddings and on personal occasions, and then, quite often they are a nuisance. But in principle, I’m always for a maximum of freedom.

    • The late arrival of darkness at our latitude, especially with daylight-savings, means that folks often don’t go outside to shoot-off their fireworks until ten and ten-thirty sometimes…and they continue for about an hour…which goes along with what you were saying about them being a nuisance…but yes, I agree with the principle of maximum freedom…with a measure of respect for others, too.

  6. No fireworks here . . . and to my great surprise . . . no one in our neighborhood set off so much as a firecracker this holiday.

I guess the memory of nearly 600 homes and two deaths in the Black Forest fire is still fresh in the minds of many.

    • Knowing about your fires from the past two years, and having seen the smoke-filled skies here, I am stupified that anyone around here even thinks of shooting them off….fortunately, we’ve had some nice monsoon-like rains over the past four days, so the risk is a bit lower….

      • For the first time in recent memory we’ve had a nice gentle rain lasting a few hours. It should help, but it will depend on the winds and temperatures . . . stuff dries up pretty fast here.

        • Gentle rain for a few hours sounds wonderful….I hope the moisture lasts for a while…

  7. After a few days it must be like an onslaught! I lived a few years in rural western North Carolina. There people mostly just fired their shotguns into the air, on the 4th and again on New Years. It was sparsely populated enough that one just heard shots here and there, with silence between – what I’m thinking is that sometimes in a more urban area, a lot of fireworks can feel claustrophobic, but out there that didn’t happen. Nice photo – love those light scribbles.

    • Thanks, Lynn…and yes, it can almost be oppressive some nights. We used to have quite a problem when I lived in Phoenix…with the firing of guns to celebrate…we had a 14yo girl killed by a falling bullet one year, and now the state has something called “Shannon’s Law” that makes it a felony to fire weapons into the air. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon's_law_(Arizona)

  8. Thankfully no one set them off here. It’s so dry the trees may spontaneously combust. Great shot!

    • No, you guys don’t need any more fires over there…. We’ve been having some showers here for the past week or so, off and on…hopefully some of it has been getting to your side of the mountains, as well….
