“Chipmunks” in Days Fork

I should have investigated the little guys before just throwing a common name at them, but these are actually Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels, Spermophilus lateralus.  They do look very similar to Chipmunks, but they are lacking stripes on their faces, so they’re not.  A special thank you to my friend who raised the question.  🙂

  1. They’re cute, but they’ve got some sharp teeth.

    • I would imagine they do, Allen. While these guys did pose nicely to have their photo made, they were still rather skittish and would probably not let anybody get close enough to bit them.

  2. How very cute! Looks like Alvin and Simon, but where’s Theodore? Did they sing for you?

    • There was a little bit of chirping as they talked to one another for a minute or so, but no…no real singing to speak of. 😉

      • …or are you too young to know of Alvin and the Chipmunks?

        September 2, 2013 at 1:48 pm

        • Jayzus, Gunta…how could I be too young?! Anyway, they’ve had enough movies made of them in the last several years that even if I hadn’t seen them in my own childhood, I have in my children’s….. 😉

          • Ooops… so I’m showing MY age… hadn’t kept up with all the new movies and continuing adventures. I just remember them from waaaaaaay back when they first did a Xmas (?) song(S)????

All that aside, I love the shot! Like Mike said, looks like the one was about to be shot out of that tube, 😉

          • Well…I think I can get away with saying it here and out of ear-shot of the little ones, you haven’t missed much by not staying current on their new adventures…. 😉

I’m glad you liked the shot, too…ready to launch……

  3. Kelly

They almost look fake, as if you posed them there for pictures 😀

  4. Looks like the little fella is about to be launched into space.

    September 1, 2013 at 7:34 pm

    • It sure looks that way, but he was content to just sit there for a while…it even looked like he was nodding-off after a bit….

  5. He’s not wearing a helmet or a costume with a cape . . . and, was there a net?

    September 1, 2013 at 8:18 pm

    • Hmm….no, didn’t see any of the circus stuff laying about, Emilio…just old mining equipment….

  12. That’s super cute! There are so many chipmunks in my yard we could play a round of golf with the all the holes they build!

    • I don’t think I would regard them as so cute if they did that to my lawn…but I suppose that does help to keep it aerated to help the grass grow, so maybe it’s not such a bad thing….
