Summer Solstice Morning Trail in the Sonora Desert

It’s a little more than a week-old at this point, but it’s one of the only “nice” shots from the entire five hours out there, so I thought I’d share it.  This is photo #6, taken at 7:05 a.m., on the Black Canyon Trail, heading north from Black Canyon City, Arizona, USA.  It was hotter than blue blazes toward the end of the hike and there was nothing so inviting as the thought of getting into the truck and making a quick stop at a corner store for an ice-cold Coke.  I’m not in the habit of doing that after a hike, but it sure was wonderful on this particular afternoon!

As always, Words are as good as the image.

  2. Blue Blazes, I hear but never experienced, can be pretty hot.

. . . they might have made for a worthwhile photo as well.

    • Yes, it was damn hot…and they were rather elusive when the camera was out…couldn’t see them, but could feel them to the bone…..

  3. I remember that feeling very well! That scene makes me yearn for a visit to the desert, but in a cooler season!

    • Yes, Terry, in a much cooler season!

  4. Don’t know how you stand it. The heat totally does me in. But must be fine to get out early in the morning before the worst of it. Still, the one shot is a very nice one.

    • Thank you, Gunta….and I don’t know how I could stand it either. Most of the first half was nice, simply being out on the trail, but the last half was just an ugly kind of hot…not pleasurable in the least…..

  5. You certainly earned your Coke. I love the depth of the scene.

    • Needed to be submerged in a tub of ice-water, too, Laura….and thank you.

  7. It does sizzle in this photo, even at 7:05…yes, a Coke time for sure, after that one! I like the way the light sprinkles across this scene.

    • I find that the morning hours are best for photography on the trail…and I enjoy being on this side of the subject when the sun is on the other side. I think it might really be that I’m able to capture the sprinkles of light that way…it strikes me that way, anyway.

  8. ‘Blue Blazes’ is a great phrase. We tend to use it in a different context: ‘where in the blue blazes have you been?’ – meaning where the hell have you been. This is an intriguing landscape that entices me in. There’s nothing like an ice-cold drink after a long hot hike. I can vividly remember a few days that ended with a longed-for drink.

    • Yes, Andy, it was used in a different context, but meant the same thing…it was hotter than hell out there…in that intriguing landscape.
