About the Blog

This web-log or journal started-out as a place where I shared thoughts of thoughts and other sundry things, pieces of my mind, if you will. Most of the postings in the archives from 2009-2010 are in essay or story form.  Family members and closer friends might recognize some of these reflections, as many of them will recount my perceptions of experiences that I’ve had over the years in my work with the health department as a communicable disease investigator working with sexually transmitted diseases, my volunteer work as a member of an Arizona State Supreme Court foster-care review board, and in more recent years as a police 9-1-1 call-taker, dispatcher, and supervisor. My formal education centered on sociology, with a bit of psychology and cultural anthropology thrown into the mix, so related essays, reflections, or observations relative to those studies may appear in the postings as well. Some of them might also touch on my childhood experiences and how they have contributed to who I am today. While much of life can be humorous, my writings likely won’t reflect much of the lighter side of life. The weightier elements of our human existence seem to come out more in my writing, so I hope you will not see the work as dark, but maybe just more internal, representing what is in the places where even you keep your more serious thoughts and reflections.

Shortly after moving to the Salt Lake City area of Utah, USA, in the later part of 2010, the blog morphed into an electronic display-case with photographs of the things and places that I found on my hiking adventures in the local canyons and mountains.  There were still occasional writings on certain observations and reflections, but they became less frequent as I spent more time in the out-of-doors and surrounded by the beauty of our natural world.

As fate would have it, and as you might have noticed already if you’ve been browsing or scrolling through the blog, we returned to Phoenix and are living once again in the pan of desert that is often referred to as “The Valley of the Sun.”  Life is still as challenging as it was when we lived here before moving to Salt Lake City, but I am hoping to keep the blog focused on the out-of-doors where I am intentionally looking for the beauty that can be found in the Arizona Sonora Desert…and in the more mountainous regions that are north of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

I hope you’ll enjoy what you find here…if you’re looking for reflections on life, dig into the archives of the first two years of the blog…if you’re interested in captured images of the natural world, you’ll encounter those in the more recent posts.  Finally, if you do like what you find here, please leave me a comment so I can thank you for visiting.

Take care, and thank you for sharing your time with me.

Scott

    • You’re welcome for the visit, Kerry. Your work is an inspiration for the rest of us who try our hands at photography. You have some incredible photos. I’ll look forward to your visits. Take care….

  6. Hi Scott.

I’ve nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award (see this link for details:

    http://lightscapesphotography.wordpress.com/2011/12/29/the-versatile-blogger-award/

The “terms” of receipt are included in that post. I know that some folks see this sort of thing as a nuisance rather than an honor and, while I don’t feel that way I can understand why others might, so if you’d prefer not to deal with it, as far as I’m concerned, simply disregard the whole thing.

    Regards,

    –Kerry

    December 29, 2011 at 10:46 pm

    • Good morning, Kerry –

I am very surprised and honored by your nomination. I’ve looked at some of the other blogs that you’ve nominated and am humbled to be considered worthy of being named with them…and you, in this regard. You have touched my heart…thank you.

      December 30, 2011 at 7:20 am

      • My pleasure, Scott. But you’ve more than earned the honor, IMO.

        December 30, 2011 at 9:31 am

        • Something like this kind of raises the bar a bit, Kerry…encouragement to do better, somehow. Thank you again…and for your kind words.

  7. Thank you for dropping by my blog. When I returned the visit I was fascinated by yours. Loved the tiger photo-story. As one who used to be in the teaching profession I thought it would provoked a whole lesson series. I was also interested in your nomination as Versatile Blogger. Not only do you deserve it but it seems a great way to link up with other great bloggers. Congratulations!

    January 4, 2012 at 4:50 pm

    • Thank you for your nice words about my blog and recent award, Marion. I’m glad you enjoyed the tiger photo-story. I believe you are correct, too, it could provoke a whole lesson series. My wife shared what it meant to her in the context of our lives and our children and her thoughts were completely separate from the ones I had as I was mulling it over and writing it. And yes, the award has become a wonderful way of connecting with many great bloggers. I have come across so many…it’s beautiful! Thank you again.

I love your writing already and I have only read a few posts. Will look forward to reading back through your past posts and looking at some more of your photos.
It’s fascinating how so many of us bloggers connect & meet others with shared creative hobbies or similar interests in general.

  16. George Weaver

Lord, I’m so happy to have found your blog. I’m on a mission to read the blogs of the kind people who have come to me and encouraged me. I am the old woman who keeps a parrot. You visited me just before I left. I share your social worker background. Everything you have done and continue to do really is social work, you know. I felt it when I opened the door and saw the gull. I knew nothing of gulls. Now I do. This is going to be a place where I feel right at home. I know it!

I promised myself that I would not blog again until my road trip was finished. I lied to me. I am going to post your gull and your story right now. I see Elisa’s face here. She told you about me for sure. I don’t know Elisa yet either, but I’m on my way to her door.

    Thank you, Scott.

    • Wow!! What a beautiful comment, George! And how nice to have so much in common with you! I so appreciate your visiting…and you are welcome, please, to stop-by frequently.

I hope you have a nice visit with Elisa, too. 🙂

      Thank You, George….

  17. victoriaaphotography

Love that beautiful rich crimson colour of your blog page, but cannot focus on the font colour to read today’s post (and can’t read your Blogroll at all). I am not colourblind, but wonder would it be possible to choose a font colour that is lighter or has more contrast to the crimson background.
I would very much appreciate your consideration on this as I really enjoy reading your articles.

    February 18, 2012 at 5:22 pm

    • I hope that helps, Victoria. Please let me know. Thank you. 🙂

      February 18, 2012 at 8:23 pm

      • victoriaaphotography

Much better, thankyou, Scott (although I really liked the crimson background).
(still can’t read the Blogroll or Title of your post so I suppose it must be a darker brownish colour).
But it’s the article words that count and I can read those now. I love both the crimson and the dark green backgrounds. Nice solid earthy colours – very grounding.

I admit I’m not a great fan of some of the irridescent colours on some people’s blogs, but everyone to their own. Maybe I’m a bit old-fashioned (Funny how colours go in and out of fashion, Christmas 2010 I rec’d all bright pink and grey Christmas cards in the mail).

I only chose a black background for my PhotoBlog, because it’s neutral & works for any coloured photo. I tried grey and blue backgrounds also. Sometimes I feel like brightening my blog up a bit with all that black on it.

        February 18, 2012 at 10:29 pm

        • I understand completely, the bright stuff is a bit much when there’s so much of it. 🙂

I know you’ve been at this for a very long time and don’t need awards, but I’m nominating you anyway because your blog IS awesome. The award is the ABC award for awesome blog content. Following the rules is not mandatory. I just wanted you to know how much your blog means to me and to a lot of other folks. You do it right.

I will visit your award post and then try to alphabetize myself for a post of my own. Thank you again. 🙂

  43. Sometimes I wish I lived in an area as scenic as yours. In the mid-1990s I flew over Utah on my way to California, and what I saw looking down from the plane made me determined to go back and explore at ground level, which I did a couple of years later. What a fertile place for photography. You must indeed be happy to have moved there.

    June 18, 2013 at 7:08 am

    • Good morning, Steven – I am very happy to have moved here to the mountain area of Salt Lake….and feel very fortunate to be in such a beautiful place…it’s something I cherish. Thank you for visiting again. 🙂

  50. Hi Scott
I would like to chat a few things over with you.
I love your photographs here on your blog and website – they are an inspiration. I can tell you love your country and the lansdcapes and I would love to pick your brain if I may.
I am an amateur filmmaker – a hobbyist – and I am visiting southern Arizona, and Tucson in particular, to film another short western called Desert Monologue this coming June 2014.
I am taking a cowboy actor out to the desert for a 2 day shoot and am wondering where the best locations would be for landscape, isolation, away from the public, but fairly accessible by vehicle.
Please email me so we can discuss further

  52. Hi old friend, how are you? I’ve missed seeing you pop up in the reader. I thought you maybe have taken a vacation or off visiting somewhere. Whatever you’re doing, I hope it goes well. Regards, John.

    August 22, 2014 at 4:16 pm

    • Hello, dear John…I am still here, but feeling very far away. I am adjusting to my life here in the desert, the new work schedule, and the renewed presence of “heat” in my life. I’ve only managed to take one hike into the mountains, and even with suggestions of other subject matter, I’m having difficulty finding anything to inspire any photographic explorations, etc. Seems that my “free” time is more limited than it used to be, and when I do find some of any quality, the computer doesn’t interest me enough to overwhelm my desire to be inside of a book. And not to whine, but I am grievously missing my mountains and canyons and have images of them flashing into my mind unbidden at times when I’m focused on other things…. So…yes, I am here and will likely return in fuller force, but am away in spirit right now. Thank you for checking on me….I do appreciate your thoughts.

      August 23, 2014 at 9:59 am

      • I ‘felt’ that you were missing those hikes and that your new location was taking time to adjust to. Reading is an essential interest and escape, and may yet get your creative juices running back to your writing….. a novel even?
Regardless of this I do hope that you can find a new focus, after all photography and blogging can take a back seat for a while.
We all have to reassess and take stock from time to time and life has the capacity to take us on a different course. My good wishes for renewed vigour and optimism in what is a wonderful life, despite the occasional pothole. Best wishes, Scott, to you and yours.

        August 23, 2014 at 10:16 am

        • The reading has definitely sparked my desire to write again, John…and it is something that I have done, too, but more in a journal form at the present…some appropriate to share and some not. Thank you for your encouragement, your uplifting and understanding words…and for your best wishes, my friend.

I find it very fascinating when bloggers decide to change their blog content. I mean, that’s really brave– to not stick with what we’ve started when we know we can be up for better things. Kudos, good Sir, for your works of art (whether words or photographs) and pieces of yourself which you openly share to the world. That’s really very inspiring 🙂

    December 26, 2014 at 3:43 am

    • I appreciate your thoughtful comment, Christine…thank you very much. 🙂

  54. I was thinking about you as we drove into Arizona. You could probably do a series on the beauty of some of the bridges. We don’t have any kind of ornate bridges like I’ve seen here. Yesterday, we took a drive to Alamo Lake State Park – stunning!

  56. I’ve fully enjoyed your mountain photography – wow! I’ve moved from a hilly Swedish landscape to The Netherlands, and now live below sea level in an extremely flat landscape. It has its charm, but seeing those huge mountains trigger a deep feeling of wonder and fascination, and also humbleness, because it’s a reminder that we are so small.
And then I read your About, about you and the shift in your blog. And I sense I have landed in a truly genuine place here. I look forward to explore your blog further!

    • Such wonderful words!! Thank you so much! I will look forward to your visits and will stop-by to hang-out with you for a while, as well. 🙂

Beautiful images here. I enjoyed visiting. Wonderful nature. I’m home today and this blog inspires me to go for a walk in my hometown’s gorge lined with cedars and split by the river, which is high right now. Thanks!

    May 14, 2015 at 5:40 am

    • Thank you for the nice words, Annajane…and I’m glad you enjoyed the visit. I hope you made it out to the gorge to walk among your cedars and river….sounds like a wonderful place.

Hi Scott, Did you ever get any solid information or story on the woman astronaut mural?

    May 12, 2016 at 11:41 pm

    • Hello, Jan – no…I never spoke with anybody from the store and didn’t make contact with the artist through email, etc. I left SLC just about two years ago and it looked like the store had closed…..
