Jordan River

Bridgework….

I visited an old friend when I was in Salt Lake City a couple of months ago…

You might remember it from the first posting here

…another visit as shared here…or another one here….

There is something particularly alluring about the bridge and its location…something that makes me want to return again and again….

“Bridge over Gentle Waters” revisited….

Five and a half years have passed since I made the first photograph on a sweet April morning in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Dense river-side vegetation and seriously overhanging limbs prevented me from gaining even a similar perspective of that earlier image…so this is what it looks from the other side.

Jordan River morning….

I was driving around the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City yesterday morning looking for the access point to the Jordan River Walkway where I made this photograph a few years ago.  I knew I was in the general area, but couldn’t remember exactly where it was…until I was actually leaving and returning home after having given-up the search.

It wasn’t really a sad moment, though, thinking that I would miss the occasion to photograph that bridge in the Fall, as I found myself in this wonderful location just five blocks north of where I originally wanted to go.  There were no-parking signs along the street, so I parked at the Day-Riverside Library just west on 1000 North, took my time making photos from the street-bridge in both directions, and then walking a roughly half-mile loop south down to the next river-bridge and back.

Not bad for a little point-and-shoot camera….

Wild thing….

The “Plan” for yesterday was to locate myself up in the mountains along a four-plus mile trail that led to one of my favorite Wasatch Mountain lakes, but the weather forecast suggested a 60-80% chance of snow and rain up there…and I did not bring any wet-weather-appropriate hiking gear with me from the desert…so I instead went and had lunch with an old friend…and then stopped off at the Jordan River Walkway on my way back to the house.  I know that I have shared images and commentary from/about the Jordan River when I was living here in the Salt Lake Valley, so some of you might be familiar with it already in a general sense.  If not, you can click on the highlighted and hyperlinked words above to visit the Jordan River Commission’s official website for more information.

While I did manage to make more than a few images of a couple of storks, a flotilla of juvenile ducks, bridge crossings, and river-scapes with mountain backgrounds, I also happened upon the above scene.  I had spied a small path in the wild grasses that appeared to lead from the walkway down to the river’s edge and was preparing to follow it so I might gain a closer vantage point/perspective…until I noticed this feral cat that had stopped in the middle of it.  The little creature was not startled or alarmed at my presence and didn’t move for what was probably only a minute or two…long enough for me to capture four or five images.  Anyway, there it is…nearly enveloped in a beautiful canopy of Russian Olive trees and other vegetation along the Jordan River.

Bridge over the Jordan River

This is a rather mid-town view of another bridge that goes over the Jordan River…the waterway that spans the entire Salt Lake Valley…coming north from Utah Lake in Utah County, by Provo and Orem…slicing through the more than fifty miles of its course and emptying into the Great Salt Lake at the far northwestern end of the city.  I’ve mentioned before that there is a walkway that parallels the river for much of the way…a nice inner-city refuge for the individual seeking some quiet time closer to nature, but not away and out in the mountains.  There is a golf course off to the left and neighborhoods to the right and directly ahead in the image.  If you like photos of bridges, you can go to the bottom of the page and click on the Categories widget and find the selection for Bridges…which will provide a rolling page of all the posts I’ve provided over the years that contain bridges….
