Antelope Island – a study of White, first….

If you’ve been visiting this blog for at least a couple of years, or have spent some time browsing through the archives, you might remember the excursions that my family and I have made out to Antelope Island, the largest island in The Great Salt Lake of northern Utah, USA.  As much of our local family is currently visiting other family down in Arizona right now, my second son, his son, and I thought we would take another field-trip to the island.  We were expecting it to look a bit different with a blanket of snow.

If you’d like to see the posts from our other visits, you can scroll down to the bottom of the page, find the Categories widget, and then click on Antelope Island.  If you’ll visit some of those earlier posts, I think you’ll agree that things look very different with the snow.

You can view the images in a larger format by clicking on any photograph…you’ll be able to view them in a bit of a slide-show….

You might remember this tree stump from September, 2012, when I had the series of posts, “by sun and salt,” first through last…

  1. How bleak: you might almost be on another planet.

    • Yes, I thought it was going to be “partly cloudy,” and it was…on the other side of the island….

  2. At first glance I though an elk was floundering in deep water…

    • It’s really pretty when the water level is higher and you can see the stump reflecting in the still water with the island in the background….

  4. I love that stump of wood just poking up in the middle of all the whiteness. Smashing post Scott.

  5. It looks like you were on lake ice. That’s just the way it looks.

    • This part was actually the lake-bed, given that the water level is so low right now…soggy, mushy, gray dirt with an icy/snowy coating at this location…..

  6. Is the water in the Great Salt Lake really frozen? Were you able to walk to the island? I’d think that would be an extremely treacherous undertaking!

    • Hello Gary – the water level of The Great Salt Lake is incredibly low right now, and all of the area up to and beyond the stump that you see covered with snow is essentially lake-bed…there were some soggy places, which you can see as the darker spots in the snow. I’ll have some images in upcoming posts that show a more typical lake surface…. We drove the causeway to the island, but there are areas on the south-eastern side of the lake where someone could probably walk all the way to Antelope Island…and Stansbury Island, too, which is further west and will also appear in upcoming posts….

    • Thank you, Susan…there was a rather “otherworldly” feel out there.

  9. Positively Arctic (although the tree stump would be a bit out of place!) But so very bleak too.

    • Yes, the stump would have been imported, somehow. 😉

    • I was on firm ground when I made the photos, John…and my son and grandson were on a very thick layer of ice that was on top of maybe three inches of water…at that location…but I suppose it does have a very disconcerting appearance….
