Antelope Island – a study of White, first….
If you’ve been visiting this blog for at least a couple of years, or have spent some time browsing through the archives, you might remember the excursions that my family and I have made out to Antelope Island, the largest island in The Great Salt Lake of northern Utah, USA. As much of our local family is currently visiting other family down in Arizona right now, my second son, his son, and I thought we would take another field-trip to the island. We were expecting it to look a bit different with a blanket of snow.

It’s really pretty when the water level is higher and you can see the stump reflecting in the still water with the island in the background….

This part was actually the lake-bed, given that the water level is so low right now…soggy, mushy, gray dirt with an icy/snowy coating at this location…..

Is the water in the Great Salt Lake really frozen? Were you able to walk to the island? I’d think that would be an extremely treacherous undertaking!

Hello Gary – the water level of The Great Salt Lake is incredibly low right now, and all of the area up to and beyond the stump that you see covered with snow is essentially lake-bed…there were some soggy places, which you can see as the darker spots in the snow. I’ll have some images in upcoming posts that show a more typical lake surface…. We drove the causeway to the island, but there are areas on the south-eastern side of the lake where someone could probably walk all the way to Antelope Island…and Stansbury Island, too, which is further west and will also appear in upcoming posts….

Those pictures of yours………are…..scary……..agoraphobia rules…….even looking at them on my iPad and my legs have turned to jelly…….

I was on firm ground when I made the photos, John…and my son and grandson were on a very thick layer of ice that was on top of maybe three inches of water…at that location…but I suppose it does have a very disconcerting appearance….
